Who ever saw kindness as a weakness, never saw what it can do for, or to a community.  This year Tim Shults, owner of Shults Auto Group and also my father has gone above and beyond to show his commitment and love for his home town.

At the opening of the Junior World Hockey Championships, he pledged a substantial donation to the WCA Hospital new Emergency Room Project.  One of the greatest things I have seen between that moment and today (January 10, 2011) is the incredible outpouring of appreciaton and the positive attitude the community is displaying.  I think it gives hope and inspiration for what Jamestown can and will soon be in the near future.  Please read below for the full coverage story from the Post Journal.

Sincerely,

Laurie Shults

Whether it is buying or maintaining a car, or ensuring access to quality medical care, Shults Auto Group has a clear message: We've got you covered.

On Tuesday, the auto dealership announced its contribution of $250,000 to the WCA Hospital's capital campaign for its new emergency department.

"To be a great community, you must have access to great health care," said Tim Shults, owner and president of the auto dealership. "I believe it is for this reason that Shults Auto Group and the Shults family is making the most meaningful pledge of community support in its history."

He said Jamestown was at a "pivotal point," in which the addition to the hospital underscores the city is a "healthy community with great leadership."

Betsy Wright, president and CEO of WCA Hospital, confirmed the emergency department is a worthy cause. The department admits 39,000 patients annually from the region, she said, and about 75 percent of all recipients of inpatient care begin their hospital stay in the emergency room.

"When we look at national benchmarks for quality, WCA always ranks very, very high, and we are in the top 10 percent of hospitals for those indicators. And that care begins in our emergency department," Wright said.

The "incredibly important gift" from Shults Auto brings the total fundraising to $13.3 million, she added. "The community has been very supportive of the capital campaign."

After a long period of fundraising and planning, Wright announced the beginning of ground work to build the new hospital wing. The foundation should be laid in four to six weeks, after the demolished South Building is cleared from the site.

"If you drive by the hospital, you will actually see the physical signs of progress right now," she said.

It feels great to do the right thing.  Let us know if someone in the community did something worthy of calling them a hero and you may see it posted in the next Shults ENew.  I think after reading this article, there is no question who Gloria Gillespie's Everyday Heros were, the day of November 11th.

Readers' Forum, Post Journal:

"Thank you to three wonderful men from New York state. On Nov 11 I left my home in Ontario at 2:30 a.m. heading for Reston, Va., to arrive at 2 p.m.

At the intersection of highways 219 and 86 my car broke down at 7:30 a.m. A very kind man named Steve crawled under my car to determine I had a broken coil spring. Steve phones Clayt's Body Shop in Bradford and got another kind soul out of bed to come and tow me to Shults Nissan in Jamestown.

Upon arriving, Kelly Frederes, assistant service manager, bent over backwards to help me. First the part required needed to be overnighted from New Jersey and then an estimated 4-5 hours to repair the vehicle. Knowing I had to be in Reston that day, Kelly phoned to a car rental agency and was told they didn't have any.

So Kelly arranges for me to take one of their cars from their lot and told me to spend the weekend in North Carolina and come back for my car on Monday.

As a lone woman driving, I can't express how much I appreciated the warmth and caring from these three men.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas."

"The Secret of the '5' Spice".

Chef says:  If we skip to the end, we see that there is no secret at all. It's a matter of differences. Take a look at the ingredients of pumpkin spice versus chinese 5 spice.

Pumpkin Spice

cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, allspice

Chinese Five Spice:

cinnamon, clove, ginger, fennel, anise

If you disregard the common ingredients and focus on the differences, we'll notice that the 5 spice is a bit bolder and aromatic with the fennel component.

The secret is in the use. Let's substitute our familiar pumpkin spice with Chinese 5 spice in some recipes. We're shooting for fast and easy here.

5 SPICE PUMPKIN PIE

4 oz Pumpkin Puree

8 oz Heavy Cream - whipped

1T. Sugar

1 box Jello Pudding Mix, Vanilla

2t. Chinese Five Spice

1 pinch of salt

1 Ready Made Pie Shell

Mix all ingredients in a bowl until well incorporated. Fill pie shell and refrigerate. Top with whipped cream.
